A U.S. Air Force helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at Virginia airport on Monday.
After someone shot at him, injuring a crew member, local and military officials said.
The UH-1N Huey is part of the 1st Helicopter Squadron at the Andrews Joint Base.
When the incident occurred, it was flying about 1,000 feet above the ground, about 10 miles northwest of Manassas Regional Airport, the Air Force said in a statement.
The injured crew member was taken to hospital and discharged.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
The FBI “dispatched special agents and an evidence response team to Manassas airport after receiving reports that a helicopter was fired upon nearby from the ground,” the FBI’s Washington field office said in a statement.
Manassas regional airport officials said they were called at around 12:20 pm and warned that “a military helicopter was approaching and paramedics were on the way,” said airport operations officer Richard Allabo.
A second airport employee said the injured Air Force crew member was taken to a local facility for treatment.
