Argentina vs Brazil Final Report
Messi wins first major tournament with Argentina
Argentina finally managed to win a major trophy after a 28-year wait – and secure Lionel Messi’s first major international trophy. A fabulous Ángel Di María goal was enough to win a 15th Copa América trophy for his nation as they ran out 1-0 winners against fierce rivals Brazil.
The ‘Superclásico de las Américas’ began in cagey fashion with neither side able to gain control. In true South American fashion, players from both nations tried to call on the referee to award a foul anytime opposition came near them or made contact. Argentina began to take control as the half went on, and took the lead midway through a brilliant Di María finish. The PSG playmaker was played through on goal via a stunning long pass from Rodrigo De Paul, before lobbing Brazil’s goalkeeper Ederson with ease, leaving him helpless. As the half went on, Brazil failed to impose themselves and Argentina contained their rivals successfully to take their lead into HT.
Tite’s Brazilian men came out in the second half fired up and ramped up the pressure on Argentina, as their goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was called into action right away. Richarlison thought he had bagged the equaliser just minutes into the half but it was correctly ruled out for offside. Despite the early pressure and attacking substitutions, the Argentines managed to deal with it well, and defended their slender lead brilliantly.
Lionel Scaloni made a host of changes towards the end of the match, doing everything he possibly could to disrupt any rhythm to Brazil’s play, and it worked as Brazil failed to find an equaliser, and the Argentinians successfully held onto their one goal lead to spark rapturous celebrations.
The huge Copa América triumph for Argentina puts so many negative records to bed. It is their first major trophy since winning the same competition back in 1993. It also means they have ended their wretched run of losses at the final stage, following four losses in a row in Copa América finals. For Brazil, it is their first loss in a competitive match at the Estadio de Maracanã since 1950, and leaves starman Neymar still searching for his first major trophy for his country.
