Former UFC fighter and analyst Dan Hardy has spoken about the upcoming contenders’ fight between lightweights Conor McGregor (22-4) and Dustin Poirier (26-6) at UFC 257 in late January.
“The difference in arm span between these guys is only a couple of centimeters, but given McGregor’s style, this is a big advantage. Take a look at how he takes advantage of this: beats stretched, stands sideways to you, and covers the maximum distance when hitting with a straight left fist.
Poirier prefers to shoot short and be a little closer to the opponent. It is for this reason that he is the third most bpm [average] in lightweight history and the tenth most wins in the UFC. So in his place I would be confident in my style before this fight, ” – said Dan Hardy.
“When Poirier enters the octagon, he needs about one and a half minutes to warm up and get used to his opponent. And if he goes through this stage, he begins to enjoy the fight and becomes very dangerous.
But in those first 90 seconds, it is much easier to break through and not so hard to hit, since Poirier is pinched. In particular, [in the first fight with McGregor] that left side simply knocked his legs out from under him, and he fell. That’s what he needs to overcome in revenge, ”said Dan Hardy.
