At UFC 310 on Saturday, top heavyweights Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov fought to an extremely close split decision, with the Frenchman slightly edging on the judges scorecard.
Heading into his UFC 310 fight against Ciryl Gane, Alexander Volkov was riding a four fight win streak and a win over ‘Bon Gamin’ would’ve put him into title contention at heavyweight.
Despite that, after a close three rounds, the judges gave the decision to the former interim champion, Gane, which even he wasn’t too pleased about as he stormed out of the Octagon shortly after his fight before returning and claiming he suffered broken toes.
Dana White reveals the conversation he had with the commission about the decision
The judging of UFC fights continues to be an issue each and every week, however, it is unfortunately out of the promotions hands as it is the commission who is responsible for the judges they employ.
However, following the big fight at heavyweight, UFC CEO Dana White decided to try and get answers from the commission regarding how they came to their controversial scoring of the fight.
“So here’s what happened after that fight, you heard the boo’s, I went over to Volkov, I apologised to him, I thought he won the fight,” he began to explain at the UFC 310 post-fight press conference.
“And then the head of the commission came over and said, ‘Listen, we feel like that second round was really close and could’ve gone either way both guys got rocked’, I can’t remember which (fighter) they thought had the worst of it in the second round but, you know.
“They were making the argument on why the fight was judged the way it was, I had a problem with the (Bryan) Battle fight too. It doesn’t f*cking matter what I think, it really doesn’t because at the end of the day, they decide who wins and loses, not us,” White continued.
Bryan Battle picked up a decision win over Randy Brown after missing weight by 4lbs on Friday, which White and a large majority of the fanbase also deemed as a controversial decision.
