Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev competed for the coveted UFC lightweight title at UFC 280.
‘Do Bronx’ was looking to win back the title that he lost on the weigh-in scale at UFC 274. Despite ‘do Bronx’ defeating Justin Gaethje in the pay-per-view’s main event, he was not crowned as the champion due to missing weight.
Meanwhile, the Dagestani fighter was looking to complete the long-term goal and dream of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father.
Makhachev was able to submit Oliveira in the second round.
The UFC have now released never-before-seen footage of the aftermath of the defeat. In the clip, a distraught Oliveira is seen being consoled by his team.
The footage was posted to Twitter by FullCombat.

Going into the fight against Islam Makhachev, the Brazilian was desperate to reclaim the title that many felt already belonged to him. The disappointment that ‘do Bronx’ experienced in the footage is almost palpable.
Charles Oliveira clarifies potential fight versus Rafael Fiziev is “not gonna happen”
Less than a month has passed since Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev faced off for the vacant UFC lightweight title. Despite the little time that has elapsed since UFC 280, Oliveira’s next opponent has already been reported.
MMA outlet MMA Uncensored reported that rising lightweight contender Rafael Fiziev is being targeted to face the Brazilian. However, ‘do Bronx’ has replied to the matchup, saying that he isn’t interested:
“Not gonna happen. I need a break. Thank you guys!”
See the tweet below:
Rafael Fiziev has defeated his previous six opponents. ‘Ataman’ also produced two Knockout of the Year contenders in his last two fights.
He put away former UFC champion Rafael dos Anjos with a superb combination after knocking out Brad Riddell with a stunning spinning wheel kick.
Seeing as Fiziev is ranked No.6 in the lightweight division, a matchup with the winner of the upcoming fight between No.2-ranked Dustin Poirier and No.5-ranked Michael Chandler could be made. The two perennial contenders are set to face off next weekend at UFC 281 in a must-see affair.
A fight between Rafael Fiziev and Charles Oliveira could definitely take place in the future. For now, the Brazilian marauder has fought four times in the past 18 months and perhaps felt that some time off was needed.
