Fans react the fact that Islam Makhachev joining Conor McGregor as UFC stars with Netflix documentaries

Islam Makhachev’s star has steadily risen over the past few years. Speaking of which, the Dagestani MMA stalwart is seemingly en route to notch another accolade. Akin to combat sports megastar and longtime rival Conor McGregor, Makhachev is reportedly set to star in a Netflix documentary. Fight fans have chimed in with their takes on the same.

Islam Makhachev’s longtime teammate, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, has put forth an Instagram post featuring a photograph of himself and addressing Makhachev’s Netflix documentary. Nurmagomedov’s statement in it read:

“A documentary about @islam_makhachev will soon be on Netflix.” [*Translation courtesy: Instagram]

Incidentally, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, a cousin of ex-UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, was involved in the infamous UFC 229 post-fight brawl against Conor McGregor back in Oct. 2018. Additionally, Makhachev and McGregor have often traded barbs.

The two notable documentaries about McGregor are ‘Conor McGregor: Notorious’ (2017) and ‘McGregor Forever’ (2023). The latter is a Netflix mini-series, which garnered considerable attention.

Circling back to Islam Makhachev’s reported Netflix documentary, a number of fight fans reacted disapprovingly on X. Multiple users reiterated the longstanding steroid use allegations against Makhachev and his fellow Dagestani fighters:

“Born in dagestan started pumping huge amounts of juice in his body from a tender age and trained all day. That should be his whole story.”

Alternatively, others expressed their excitement about possibly being in for a look at the behind-the-scenes happenings from Makhachev’s life. An observer tweeted:

“So pumped for this.”

The Russian forces killed multiple attackers in counter-terrorism operations after the Dagestan terror attacks in June 2024. One of the terrorists killed was Gadzhimurad Kagirov, who’d previously trained at Khabib Nurmagomedov’s gym. The government later raided Nurmagomedov’s gym in Dagestan as a part of the investigation. One fan alluded to it, jibed at Makhachev, and tweeted:

“And his ties to khabib and the terrorist attacks right?”

Some fans seemingly opined that the Islam Makhachev documentary is a bit premature and should’ve rather been about the retired Khabib Nurmagomedov. Others appear to opine that Makhachev and his fighting style were boring:

“sounds boring as f**k”

Another X user took aim at Islam Makhachev’s alleged use of PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs) and tweeted:

“Will it show him taking needles up his a**?”
