Dustin Poirier continues to shine bright against the best in the business, this time sending surging contender Benoit Saint Denis down the lightweight ladder at UFC 299.
Poirier (30-8 MMA) had entered the contest looking to rebound, this after suffering a nasty knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in his most previous effort at UFC 291. Prior to that setback, ‘The Diamond’ had earned a submission victory over Michael Chandler in November of 2022.
Meanwhile, Benoit Saint-Denis (13-2 MMA) was returning to action for the first time since November’s UFC 295 event, where he scored a highlight reel knockout over Matt Frevola. That victory had marked the Frenchman’s fifth in a row, with all five of those wins coming by way of stoppage.
Poirier rebounded from a very tough first round to spark Saint Denis on the feet with his patented counter-punching. A right hook sent the French fighter to the canvas, setting up a knockout at the 2:32 mark of the middle frame.
It was scheduled to be a five-round fight, but Poirier would need less than two to assert his place among the best in the world at 155 pounds.
