Fiorentina vs Inter Report
Inter Milan maintained their unbeaten start to their Serie A title defence with a hard-fought 2-1 win over an in-form Fiorentina side who had made their best start to a season in six years.
The ‘Nerazzurri’ swept aside Fiorentina on both occasions they played at the Stadio Artemio Franchi last season but this meeting was an entirely different encounter altogether with Nicolás González and Dušan Vlahović both forcing Samir Handanović into early saves as Vincenzo Italiano’s team peppered the Inter goal early on. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was Fiorentina, not Inter who had scored 15 goals in their opening four games as ‘La Viola’ flew forward in numbers with Simone Inzaghi’s men offering very little in the way of attack.
Midway through the first half Fiorentina took a deserved lead and it was a breakthrough of beauty in its simplicity. A clipped ball over the top set González away down the left. The former Stuttgart man drove to the byline before sliding across a pinpoint ball for Riccardo Sottil to tap in at the back post for his first Fiorentina goal.
Inter started the second half a team transformed and completely turned the game on its head within ten minutes of the restart. First, Matteo Darmian’s slick finish brought the sides back on level terms after a quick VAR check, before Edin Džeko’s towering header from Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s corner ensured the turnaround was complete within the space of three minutes.
Fiorentina’s misery was compounded when their record signing González was dismissed for dissent 78 minutes as frustrations began to boil over. There was no way back for the ten men as Ivan Perišić wrapped up the points late on to send Inter top of the table.
