Freiburg vs Borussia Dortmund Report 21 August 2021

Freiburg heaped more misery on Borussia Dortmund as they prevailed 2-1 at the Dreisamstadion to pick up their first Bundesliga win of the season and remain unbeaten.

The hosts won this corresponding fixture last season, and they looked confident from the off of repeating that feat this time around. In fact, it took Vincenzo Grifo less than six minutes to put the ‘Breisgau-Brasilianer’ in front. It was a stunning effort too, with the Italian curling a mid-ranged free-kick beyond the grasp of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Christian Streich’s side continued to threaten on the counter-attack and, had Woo-yeong Jeong had more composure in front of goal, they may well have gone into the break 2-0 to the good. While Dortmund dominated possession, they failed to create many clear-cut opportunities. The few they did manufacture unfortunately fell to Jude Bellingham rather than main man Erling Braut Haaland – the 18-year-old was unable to beat Mark Flekken, although he did strike the woodwork with a header.

Dortmund are currently suffering somewhat of a defensive crisis due to a number of absences, and that was underlined when the home side doubled their lead soon after the interval. The ‘Schwarzgelben’ were all at sea as Freiburg cut through the backline before Roland Sallai slammed in. Marco Rose’s team did fortuitously halve the deficit when Yannik Keitel put the ball into his own net, but opportunities to equalise remained few and far between as Freiburg clung on to pick up three well-deserved points.

This defeat means Borussia Dortmund have lost twice in four games after they were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup on Wednesday. Freiburg’s situation looks a lot healthier, however, and Streich will be hoping his squad can push on in the coming weeks.
