Authoritative mixed martial arts trainer Javier Mendez assessed the performance of promising British prospect Paddy Pimblett in his fight with American veteran Tony Ferguson.
According to the coach, Paddy Pimblett didn’t get any extra points in the piggy bank as he was unable to finish Tony Ferguson but admitted he was impressed with Pimblett’s grappling.
“For Paddy, this fight didn’t do anything. He had to finish Ferguson. So he got nothing from winning on points. Having said that, it’s interesting that Piblett kept Tony in the parterre and didn’t get caught in the pain. I mean, we know how dangerous Tony is from the back. Especially considering he was in great shape. So Ferguson could have made him give up by catching him on something. So Paddy’s jiu-jitsu level is quite high,” said Javier Mendes.
Also, Javier Mendes has revealed whether Tony Ferguson should end his career after a seventh defeat in a row.
The coach hinted that it’s time for Tony Ferguson to draw conclusions as he has lost seven fights in a row, although Javier Mendez is confident the UFC can still capitalise on his name.
“On one hand, I think the UFC can still capitalise on Tony Ferguson. Even though he’s not winning, he’s still very popular. Ferguson can serve as a springboard for younger fighters. And there will always be work for him outside of the UFC. Fist fights or some other organisation. People are always willing to pay money to watch his fights.
“On the other hand, you have to pay attention that Ferguson has already lost seven fights in a row. He’s trying to change things during his training, but nothing is working. Age takes its toll. He has to think things through and make a decision with his family, people who support him. I’m not going to sit here and advise him to end his career or anything. That’s for him to decide,” the coach said.
