Manchester United need to urgently reverse their fortunes and that has led them to a previous Liverpool target
A former Liverpool transfer target could be set to line up against the Reds on Monday, should Manchester United get their way.
The two North West football giants will face-off against each other at Old Trafford next week, both in urgent need of a win after indifferent starts to the new Premier League season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have two points from six after a pair of disappointing draws while the Red Devils are pointless following a home loss to Brighton and a humiliating 4-0 weekend defeat at the hands of Brentford.
United boss Erik ten Hag is still searching for players who can improve his squad prior to Liverpool’s arrival in Manchester and according to The Athletic, the man they are now honing in on is Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic.
The report claims that the USA international has become frustrated at a lack of starts under Blues boss Thomas Thuchel. The 23-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 at cost of £58million to the West London club. But Pulisic could well have ended up at Anfield, with Klopp known to be an admirer.
Liverpool first tried to sign Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016, only to see an £11m bid for his services knocked back.
With speculation returning about the possibility of a move back in 2018, Klopp said:
“If Christian would at one point join us, I don’t know. But I like him and it’s not like that could be the problem. We respect contracts still and there is no market that I know about in the moment.
Ultimately, it was London – not Liverpool – where Pulisic landed, but having failed to convince Tuchel of his credentials it is understood that Chelsea will now consider loan offers for their player, with Manchester United believed to be his preferred destination.
United have made their worst ever start to a Premier League season but could still leapfrog their arch rivals with a home win at Old Trafford. Whether Pulisic is wearing a United shirt by the time the two sides go head-to-head is still to be determined.
