Tony Ferguson is calling for support.
Former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson wants his fans to “keep the faith” after he fell to a seventh consecutive defeat at UFC 296 this past weekend.
Following a submission setback at the hands of Bobby Green this past July in Salt Lake City, Tony Ferguson faced plenty of calls to retire from his peers and the fanbase. Those pleas have only picked up in the aftermath of Saturday’s year-ending pay-per-view.
On the main card, “El Cucuy” welcomed 155-pound prospect Paddy Pimblett back to the cage after a year on the sidelines. Despite some branding the matchup a winnable one for the out-of-form veteran, he was ultimately dominated across all three rounds.
With that, “The Baddy” has added his name to a losing skid that also includes defeats to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, and Green.
But despite his woes being added to inside the T-Mobile Arena on December 16, Ferguson’s first post-fight statement doesn’t suggest that the appearance was his last.
Tony Ferguson On UFC 296 Loss: ‘Keep The Faith’
A day on from his seventh straight setback, Tony Ferguson took to Instagram with a message for his supporters.
Although the 39-year-old didn’t go into detail on his future in the brief note, he did plead with his fans to “keep the faith,” perhaps suggesting that Tony Ferguson doesn’t see the UFC 296 defeat as the end of the road for him inside the cage.
“Love my fans & supporters,” Ferguson wrote. “You all are f*ckin’ fire. Met lots of you tonight, keep the faith MF’s. One foot in front of the other b*tches, remember what I said crew – Champ.”
At the post-fight press conference, UFC CEO Dana White himself suggested that retirement would be the best course of action for Tony Ferguson. With that, it remains to be seen whether or not “El Cucuy” will be granted another matchup by the promotion.
