Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City Report 15 August 2021
Tottenham extended their exemplary recent home record against Manchester City to four games in Nuno Espírito Santo’s first Premier League (PL) game in charge. Defeat for Pep Guardiola succumbed the Spaniard to his first-ever succession of four back-to-back away defeats to one opponent, subsequently with no goals against Spurs.
Pep Guardiola’s side started like a greyhound out of the traps forcing a succession of corners in the first five minutes putting inundated pressure on Nuno Espírito Santo’s experiential Tottenham Hotspur’s formation in front of returning fans in North London. Spurs regained a foothold in the game, taking advantage of having time on the ball, to give City a reminder they are capable of scoring goals even without Harry Kane.
Riyad Mahrez should have given City the lead after 35 minutes, missing a gilt-edged chance after the Algerian found himself unmarked in the Spurs’ area, but wasn’t able to take complete control of his wayward shot on his natural left foot. With all of the attacking flair on show, neither side were able to register a shot on target in the first half.
Heung-min Son continued his fine run of scoring against Man City, netting his fourth goal in four appearances. Taking advantage of a clinical counter-attack from inside the City half, Son cut in on a nervous Nathan Aké before proficiently curling the ball beyond Ederson into the bottom left-hand corner to send the home fans behind the goal into raptures.
Man City’s failure in the London Stadium extended their unwanted record to four appearances without a victory in just three years and gave Nuno the perfect start to the season in his first game as Spurs manager. Harry Kane’s omission from the Spurs match-day squad, despite being present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, will do nothing but increase speculation of the England captain’s inevitable move to the blue half of Manchester before the end of the month.
