Dustin Poirier currently holds the number 1 place in the UFC lightweight rankings. And he is possible opponent to get a title shot against the current UFC lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira. Regardless of this fight coming to fruition, several well-known UFC personalities have shared their opinion on the outcome of this title fight. One such person includes the former title challenger, Michael Chandler.
After Khabib Nurmagomedov freed the UFC lightweight title, Chandler and Oliveira got into a fight inside the octagon to claim the vacant title. The fight took place at UFC 262 on May 15, 2021, where fans witnessed ‘Do Bronx’ becoming the new UFC Lightweight Champion via a second-round TKO victory over Chandler.
As he has already faced Oliveira, Michael ‘Iron’ Chandler knows what type of fighter ‘Do Bronx’ is. Thus, he is the right person to analyze how Oliveira vs. Poirier would go.
In a recent interview with Helen Yee Sports, Chandler shared his point of view on the outcome of Oliveira vs. Poirier if it comes to fruition. Michael believes that ‘Do Bronx’ hasn’t been tested in a long-drawn battle.
“I think they’re both well-rounded. I think Poirier’s got a little more of that, kind of that dog in him, when the fight gets into the thick of it. Obviously, Charles Oliveira beat me in the second round. Very soon into the second round. So, we didn’t really see a lot of longevity in a fight like that”, said Michael Chandler.
“We saw him go three rounds against Tony Ferguson, but that was much a one-sided affair. I think a fight with Dustin Poirier, he puts hands on him pretty solidly those first couple rounds and kind of starts to put it on Charles. I think Poirier wins that fight by the third, fourth-round finish. If they do go all five, Poirier wins the decision”.
