Alexander Volkanovski wants another round with Islam Makhachev

UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski is not done with his two-division champ dreams.

Last year, “The Great” got two cracks at UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhahcev. At UFC 284, Volkanovski took Makhachev to the limit before coming up short via unanimous decision.

At UFC 294, the Aussie star filled in for an injured Charles Oliveira on short notice and suffered the first knockout loss of his career when Makhachev sent him spiralling with a brutal head kick in the first round.

At UFC 298, Alexander Volkanovski will defend his 145lbs crown against the undefeated Ilia Topuria. The build to the fight thus far has seen “El Matador” essentially troll “The Great” both online and in interviews.

“Lightweight’s Definitely In The Near Future” – Alexander Volkanovski

Alexander Volkanovski shared his thoughts about the rematch with Islam Makhachev after a confident victory on UFC 290

During a recent UFC 298 press conference, Alexander Volkanovski was asked if he has any intention of seeking out a third shot at lightweight glory.

“The Great” confirmed he is, and provided he secures a victory over Topuria, Alexander Volkanovski could be eyeing another crack at the 155lbs scene. The 35-year-old also confirmed he is looking to silence those questioning if he could be reaching past his prime at this point.

“I’m a realist, and I’m not expecting a rematch straightaway, you know what I mean?” Volkanovski said. “But that’s definitely something, and everyone’s gonna see that, you know, they’re gonna be the age thing and all that, you know, obviously there’s gonna be some people doubting ‘Oh, you know, is his time done?’ Which is hyping up this fight so I’m all good with it. But everyone’s gonna be reminded, and then everyone’s gonna be switching, you know, full 180 saying there’s nothing left for me in 145, and they want me to go take that lightweight belt. So that’s what I’m gonna plan on doing, I’m going go out there and take care of Ilia and then we’ll see what’s next, but lightweight’s definitely in the near future.”
