Chile vs Paraguay Highlights

Chile vs Paraguay Highlights & Full Match 25 June 2021

Miguel Almirón was involved in both goals as Paraguay progressed into the final eight of the Copa América with an impressive 2-0 victory over Chile in Brasilia.

Following a cagey opening to the match, with clear-cut chances at a premium, Paraguay took the lead in the 33rd minute as Braian Samudio clinically converted a terrific corner from Almirón. Samudio, making his first start of the tournament, rose above his marker and powered a header beyond the motionless Claudio Bravo in the ‘La Roja’ goal.

Fuelled by the opener, Carlos González – a constant outlet for ‘Los Guaraníes’ during the opening period – wasted a golden opportunity before HT to double his side’s lead, heading wide with the goal at his mercy following a misjudgement from Bravo.

Chile, having scored just once in each of their last five games, started the second half on the front foot in search of an equaliser, with Arturo Vidal heading wide when well-placed. Against the run of play, however, Paraguay soon doubled their advantage from the penalty spot. A clumsy challenge from Gary Medel on González allowed Almirón to step up and confidently fire the resulting penalty into the net. Despite nine minutes of injury-time, Chile couldn’t find a way through the resolute Paraguay rearguard, condemning ‘La Roja’ to their first defeat in seven.

The result moves two-time winners Paraguay ahead of Chile and Uruguay into second place in a tightly-contested Group A. Paraguay are left to face Uruguay in their final group game, with a draw enough to secure a second place finish for ‘Los Guaraníes’. Chile, sitting in third, are left with the possibility of a quarter-final clash with hosts Brazil if Uruguay avoid defeat.
