England vs Denmark Review 07 July 2021
Wembley crowd carries England to maiden Euro final
England are through to a first-ever European Championship final thanks to a 2-1 victory over Denmark. The ‘Three Lions’ scored a dramatic winner in extra-time to reach their first major final since 1966.
57,500 fans packed into Wembley Stadium, the vast majority supporting England, to see who would join Italy in the final on Sunday. Gareth Southgate’s side started the game in the ascendancy before Denmark worked their way into the game and displayed their counter-attacking prowess. The Danes took the lead in the 30th minute when Mikkel Damsgaard fired a powerful free-kick past Jordan Pickford, the first goal England had conceded in the tournament so far. The Three Lions responded to the partisan crowd’s encouragement and earned their just rewards nine minutes later when Simon Kjær turned Bakayo Saka’s low cross into his own net.
The second half was just as breathless as the first. Denmark continued to look good on the break, but England would have been ahead had it not been for a magnificent Kasper Schmeichel save from Harry Maguire’s header. Both sides decided to change things up midway through the second half, with Jack Grealish’s introduction in particular delighting the crowd, but the game ebbed towards extra-time as neither side was able to find an all-important breakthrough.
England dominated in extra-time, and their superiority paid off, albeit fortuitously. Raheem Sterling went down in the penalty area under minimal contact, but the decision of referee Danny Makkelie stood after a VAR check. Although Harry Kane’s spot-kick was saved by Schmeichel, the England captain dispatched the rebound to give his country the victory. The result sets up a final against Italy on Sunday at Wembley.
