Young Boys vs Manchester United Report 14 September 2021

Cristiano Ronaldo’s history-making night was overshadowed as ten-man Manchester United fell to defeat away at Young Boys. Ronaldo joined Iker Casillas as the joint-highest all-time UEFA Champions League (UCL) appearance maker, scoring the opener for the ‘Red Devils’ before Young Boys grabbed a stoppage-time winner.

Manchester United made an assertive start at the Wankdorf Stadium, and despite not scoring in his first 26 UCL matches, Ronaldo fired the ‘Red Devils’ into the lead inside the opening 15 minutes on his return to United. Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball on the left flank and his delicious pass with the outside of his foot allowed Ronaldo to fire home and put United ahead after 13 minutes.

Young Boys were not dispirited despite falling behind, spurred on by the deafening chorus at the Wankdorf. Christian Fassnacht almost fired the hosts level when he cut inside onto his weak foot, forcing David de Gea into an acrobatic one-handed save. The hosts were given another boost as Aaron Wan-Bissaka was dismissed in the 35th minute for a late challenge on Christopher Martins, leaving the visitors down to ten for the remainder.

As a result of the red card, David Wagner’s men took control in the second half as they pressed for an equaliser. The visitors’ defence remained tenacious, forcing the home side to  resort to long distance efforts. However, Manchester United’s resistance was broken midway through the second half when a fierce delivery allowed Moumi Ngamaleu to stick a toe out, and prod the ball past a helpless de Gea to bring the hosts level.

The latter stages saw record-equalling Ronaldo substituted as the ‘Red Devils’ fought for a point, with Young Boys piling on the pressure. The consistent pressure paid off in the dying stages as a lacklustre pass from Jesse Lingard allowed Theoson Siebatcheu to run through and tuck home comfortably giving Young Boys only their second ever win against English opposition.
