Officially Argentina has lost the right to host Copa America 2021

The decision could lead the event to be wiped out entirely, as co-host Colombia has also been determined unsuitable for holding matches

Officially: Argentina has lost the right to host Copa America 2021

The forty-seventh in the history of the South American tournament of the Copa America, which should start in two weeks – on June 13, a short period before the opening match, was in danger of disruption.

Recall that for the first time since 1983, the competition was supposed to be held in two states at once – Colombia and Argentina, but in April 2021, in the first of the above, the political situation worsened against the background of citizens’ dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the country, as a result of which Argentina remained the only one hostess of the international championship.

However, according to a statement from the Confederation of Football of South America (CONMEBOL), Argentina was also barred from hosting the Copa America 2021 due to the worsening “current circumstances.”

The organizers do not disclose the meaning of the latest definition, but there is every reason to believe that the worsening situation with the incidence of COVID-19 coronavirus in this country prompted the governing body to make this decision.

“CONMEBOL is analyzing proposals from other countries that have expressed interest in hosting the continental tournament. Updates will be announced shortly,” reads a message from the Confederation of the situation.

Recall that the tournament, in which 10 South American countries take part: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, as well as two invited teams – Australia and Qatar, should be held from June 13 to 10 July.
