Jack Della Maddalena pulled off a late finish at UFC 299, and apparently, he did it with a broken limb.
After landing a vicious knee, Jack Della Maddalena (17-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) finished former title challenger Gilbert Burns with follow-up punches in the third round of their main card bout at Kaseya Center in Miami. According to Della Maddalena’s manager Tim Simpson, the Australian welterweight pulled off the feat with a broken left forearm.
Simpson posted a picture of Della Maddalena’s X-ray on Tuesday evening to his Instagram Stories, which indicates a broken bone. According to Simpson, the injury occurred “early” in the fight, but did not specify which round it may have happened.
“Jack Della Maddalena arm snapped clean early in the fight,” Simpson wrote in a caption over the X-ray image.”Rallied for a finish in the 3rd. Soldier! PS Gilbert kicks hard!”
It’s unclear if Della Maddalena knew about the severity of his injury in the immediate aftermath of the fight, but he could be seen acknowledging an issue with the limb after the stoppage and during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.
Della Maddalena, 27, was also handed an indefinite suspension by the Florida Athletic Commission (FAC) until an orthopedic doctor clears his damaged forearm.
The win over Burns was the biggest of Della Maddalena’s career thus far. The victory propelled him No. 14 to No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings. The Dana White’s Contender Series veteran is undefeated through seven UFC bouts, including five stoppages.
