Getafe vs Atletico Madrid Report.
Luis Suárez was the hero late on for Atlético Madrid as he scored two late goals to win the Madrid derby against Getafe, denying the hosts their first home win in the fixture since November 2011.
The last time these two sides from Madrid met, it resulted in a 0-0 draw, and was the second of Getafe’s home matches against Atlético, Real Madrid, and Barcelona in which they went unbeaten last campaign. From the way the first-half panned out, it looked possible the home side’s unexpected hot streak against the top three could continue.
Getafe frustrated Diego Simeone’s men as they sought to score the opener, before taking the lead themselves in a moment of madness before HT. The usually assured Jan Oblak fumbled the ball in his box, and was caught napping when Stefan Mitrović emphatically headed in the resulting chance via the post.
Set the unfamiliar task of maintaining a lead having not done so in any of their five league losses so far, ‘Los Azulones’ had a tough job on their hands, which was made much harder when Carles Aleñá was sent off following a VAR review. ‘Los Rojiblancos’ ramped up the pressure, and shortly after being denied by the crossbar, Suárez stabbed an unstoppable effort past David Soria to equalise, setting up a frantic finish as Atleti pushed for a winner against Getafe’s 10 men. Suárez turned hero for Atleti in stoppage-time, when a searching cross into the box found its way to the deadly striker, who made no mistake in knocking it into the net, securing all three points for Simeone’s side.
The comeback sees Getafe still without a win in La Liga six matches into this campaign, which is their worst ever start in the Spanish top flight. Meanwhile Atlético Madrid’s run comes to an end as a relief to Diego Simeone, with their first win and goals in three matches.
