Manchester City vs Norwich Highlights 21 August 2021
Jack Grealish’s goal stole the headlines on his home debut, as Manchester City bounced back from opening day defeat in style.
Coming into the game fresh from opening day defeat, both Manchester City and Norwich City had a point to prove. It was the ‘Cityzens’ who started with a bang, however, finding the back of the net at Tim Krul’s expense, who got the final touch as Grant Hanley’s attempted block cannonned towards his own net. Pep Guardiola’s side looked far more in the mood at the Etihad, quickly finding the net for the net on a second occasion before VAR ruled the strike out for Bernardo Silva’s foul in the buildup.
Not long after, they had their second through new-man Jack Grealish. Gabriel Jesus deserves much of the credit for the goal, as it was his low-ball that allowed the former Aston Villa star to tap home in front of his new fans on his home debut. As the opening-half continued, the champions’ vice-like grip only strengthened, rarely allowing Norwich out of their own half as the whistle sounded for the break.
Not much changed in the second-half, with Manchester City in constant pursuit of a third goal, and they soon got it, with their stranglehold on proceedings leading to a third to all-but wrap the game up. Pinball in the box after a corner eventually saw the ball find the feet of Aymeric Laporte, who calmly slotted home in the 64th minute.
Not to be left out of the goal-party, Raheem Sterling made it four in the 70th minute, simply tapping home to give Gabriel Jesus his second assist of the game. Riyad Mahrez then finished the game in style, making it five by calmly slotting into the bottom corner. City were dominant and Norwich were helpless as the champions strolled to victory.
